Collective Action: Civic Engagement & Building Power
This interactive class will explore how the values many in the BDSM community already practice—consent, negotiation, trust, accountability, and power dynamics—translate into effective civic engagement and grassroots organizing. Participants will examine how people power is built, how movements grow from the margins, and why LGBTQ+ rights and bodily autonomy are deeply connected to political participation.
Using real-world examples from LGBTQ and social justice movements, the class will cover the basics of civic engagement, community organizing, and collective action, with a focus on how stigmatized communities protect themselves while building influence. We’ll discuss strategies for engaging elected officials, mobilizing networks, and showing up politically without compromising personal or community safety.
This class is designed for people interested in turning shared values into collective power—and in shaping a world where consent, dignity, and liberation are reflected not just in our scenes, but in our laws and communities.
