Open Rope Lab

  • 12850 91st St #1207 Largo, FL 33773 United States (map)

Learned something in Rope 101/102 and want time to actually practice it? Saw a tie online and want help troubleshooting before you try it at home? Open Rope Lab @ Deviance (Monthly Skill-Share + Practice) is your space.

Open Rope Lab is assisted practice, not a structured class. There’s no set curriculum and no guaranteed demos. Please don’t attend expecting the host to tie you—@Stumpp will be on hand to answer questions, help you problem-solve, and offer guidance as needed.

Who Can Join

All skill levels. All bodies. All genders. All humans. Beginners practicing fundamentals are as welcome as experienced riggers refining fit, tension, and flow.

Quick Orientation (2:10 PM, ~3 minutes)

Right after doors open, we’ll do a super short welcome + ground rules so everyone starts on the same page:

  • What this is / what this isn’t (practice lab, not a class)

  • How to ask for help (and how to get consent before touching anyone or their rope)

  • Safety basics + where to set up

Community “Ask / Offer” Sheet (available all event)

We’ll have a simple request sheet to make it easy to connect without awkward hovering. Add yourself under:

  • ASKING FOR HELP: (example: “tight single column tie,” “uplines basics,” “futomomo tension check”)

  • OFFERING HELP: (example: “beginner-friendly coaching,” “harness layout tips,” “suspension theory chat”)

  • SEEKING PRACTICE PARTNER: (example: “need a rigger,” “need a bottom,” “looking for peer practice”)

You can also join our Discord server and connect with others before or after the event.

Solo-friendly

Coming alone is totally welcome.

  • You can observe, learn, ask questions, and meet people at your comfort level.

  • You may find a practice partner through the Ask/Offer board or organic conversation.

  • Please do not expect the host to tie you or provide 1:1 private instruction during Open Rope Lab (that’s a different format/event).

Safety + Consent Baseline (non-negotiable)

This is a learning space and we keep it safe and respectful:

  • Consent first, always: ask before touching someone, their rope, or giving hands-on adjustments.

  • Safety shears required: If you are tying or being tied, shears must be accessible (on your person or within arm’s reach).

  • No impairment: do not participate in tying/being tied if you’re intoxicated or otherwise impaired.

  • Know your stop system: safe words/signals are encouraged; either person can pause/stop at any time, no explanations required.

  • Practice within your skill level: if you’re not trained in a technique (especially anything load-bearing), ask for guidance first.
