6/20 Rope Lab with Ellise and Des

$25.00

This month’s topic: Uplines and Lockoffs

This class is 2 of 3 in a monthly series that will culminate with attendees learning a partial suspension. Be sure to attend all three!

Ready to explore uplines? Uplines are the lines used in partial and full suspensions that support (or have the potential to support) a person’s weight. This class presents some foundational knowledge for tying rope to fixed points, i.e., uplines. We will cover y-hangers, hand breaks, managing jams, upper lock offs, and lower lock offs. And, all tying in this class will involve inanimate objects like bags and chairs in order to practice the skills in a low-risk context.

Class will begin at 8:00 with introductions and discussion. We will demonstrate the ties and provide step-by-step instruction with guided feedback until everyone in the room can tie it. Hang out with us after class to chat or open-rope.

What to bring: a notepad and pen/pencil, rope if you have it (some loaner rope will be available), a pair of safety scissors; wear comfortable clothes if you plan to tie or be tied

The Rope Lab is an inclusive and beginner-friendly space to learn and practice rope. We emphasize community, safety, and negotiation. If you don’t have or want a partner or are new to rope, it might be a great occasion to try self-tying. Rope education is important for everyone and self-tying is a great way to get to know your body in rope! Almost all of our ties can be self-tied, and we provide specific instructions so everyone can follow along. Mats are provided for people interested in sitting and tying on the floor. There are also sofas and chairs available. Seating is first-come, first-served, so arrive on time!

Community expectations and norms:

  1. Always ask before touching anyone or anything that doesn’t belong to you

  2. Keep side-conversations and noise to a minimum during instruction

  3. Own your own learning: Ask questions, come close to see the things, and practice within your skill level.
